How can we help you?
  • What is a dietitian and why should I see one?
A dietitian is a health professional that helps people to understand the relationship between food and health. We aim to support people to improve their health by providing expert nutrition and dietary advice. We can help support you to manage health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease or help you increase your performance in your chosen sport by fueling your body with what it needs to excel. Dietitians only promote evidence-based nutrition and won’t put you on the latest diet trend as we want you to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Seeing a dietitian can be extremely helpful if you range anywhere from having a genuine curiosity for food and what it can do for our health to suffering from a chronic disease. Some of the goals/conditions you may have that we love to assist with include: food allergies, food intolerances, sports nutrition and performance, chronic disease, malnutrition, weight management, working on building a healthy relationship with food, navigating and/or eliminating digestive issues, or anything else that may be related to food really!
  • What is the difference between a dietitian and nutritionist?
The main difference between a dietitian and nutritionist is that a dietitian has completed a minimum of 4 years of tertiary education and either has a Bachelor's degree or a Masters degree in Dietetics and has undertaken complex and extensive studies under supervision involving clinical nutrition, human nutrition, food service management and medical nutrition therapy. Nutritionists on the other hand, are not regulated by a governing body and therefore it can be unclear to know what qualification they may hold, if any. As a result all dietitians are nutritionists whereas not all nutritionists are dietitians. Dietitians in Australia are regulated by a governing body; Dietitians Australia and in Australia, and must comply with ethical standards and continual professional development to ensure they remain up to date with nutrition research and recommended practice; there is no higher qualification in nutrition than an Accredited Practising Dietitian.
  • What does APD stand for?
“Accredited Practising Dietitian” credential is a public guarantee of one's dietetic expertise. It’s the national credential for dietitians in Australia through Dietitians Australia.
  • What is an Accredited Sports Dietitian?
Accredited Sports Dietitians are APD’s who have gone on to further specialise in the field of sports nutrition, by completing the sports nutrition course through Sports Dietitian Australia (SDA), after which they are considered provisionally accredited. They must then complete a further year of continual development to become a fully accredited Sports Dietitian. Similar to that described above as an APD, Sports Dietitians must maintain their registration with SDA and continually complete professional development to maintain their knowledge and skills in the field of sports nutrition.
  • Where are you located?
Nutrition consultations are currently available online over video call/teleahtlh, meaning we can work together from anywhere in Australia.
  • Do you offer online consults?
Yes, we offer consults via Telehealth or Zoom whether you're interstate, overseas, travelling or can't make it in due to sickness or other commitments. Telehealth/Zoom are easy and safe programs that you will find easy to use even if you have not previously.
  • Do you provide meal plans?
Yes, we do. Nutrition plans are included in our sports nutrition packages, developed to suit your personal requirements and goals. Unless neccessary, my nutrition plans are never highly restrictive or overly prescriptive, but rather they give you the tools and resources to understand what your body needs and how to put together meals and snacks that meet your daily needs with portion guides and practival examples.
  • How much does it cost to see a dietitian?
Seeing a dietitian in Australia can vary greatly, depending on the type of consult you have, added extras such as meal plans or body composition testing, the location of the dietitian, the experience/specialisation of the dietitian, and rebates you may have that provide a discount for the services. At Athletic Dietetics, we offer an initial nutrition package for $390, which includes your initial consultation, first review consultation and a personalised meal plan. Ongoing review consultations are $92 (~30 minutes+ plan updates and resouces as required).
  • Do you bulk bill?
We do not currently bulk bill for medicare rebates/care plans. If you have a care plan, then a rebate or $58.30 will be deducted from your consult fee. We do offer bulk billing for DVA and NDIS funded clients.
  • Do I need a referral?
No, you can book in directly through my website for either yourself or a family member. However in order to receive a Health Care Plan and corresponding Medicare rebates, you will require a referral from your doctor.
  • Can I claim a rebate for dietetics through my private health fund?
Yes, if you have dietetic extra's included in your private health insurance cover, you may be able to receive a rebate following your consultation. You will need to enquire with your private health fund as to how much you can claim back for each visit, as it can vary between health funds and individuals levels of cover. Athletic Dietetics use Tyro Health (an online payment and claiming system, similar to HICAPS), which will apply your health fund cover, allowing you to pay the reamining gap fee. • Can I claim if I am a DVA Gold Card holder?
Yes, we accept referrals for DVA cardholders and all eligible consults are bulk billed (no out of pocket payment required).
  • What is your cancellation policy?
For our initial packages (sports nutrition and private clients), please note that a $100 deposit is required to reserve your initial consult timeslot. This deposit will be deducted from the remainder of the package price after your initial consultation ($290 remaining to be paid). This deposit is refundable if you need to cancel your appointment 72 hours (3 days) or more prior to the scheduled appointment, or transferable in the case you need to reschedule your initial consultation and do so no less than 24 hours prior to your booked appointment. The deposit is non-refundable for no-shows, cancellations with-in 72 hours of the booked appointment, or re-scheduling of appointments with-in 24 hours of booked appointments. For all other clients, please let us know at least 24 hours prior to your booked appointment if you need to cancel or re-schedule. Any no-shows or cancellations within 1 hour of the booked appointment time will be billed privately to cover the cost of your booked consult (we can not bulk bill as medicare or DVA rebates can not be claimed unless you have attended your consult).
  • What can I expect during a nutrition consultation?
During your initial consultation, I will spend the time getting to know a bit about you including your reasons for seeing a dietitian, any goals you may currently have, your health and medical history, current dietary intake, medications, exercise and other lifestyle factors including sleep. I will be able to answer any questions you may have and start to map out a plan of action for how you would like to move forward in response to your goals.
  • Do I need to prepare anything before my consultation?
For your first consultation, any recent (within 3 months) blood tests can be very useful to make sure I can best tailor recommendations to suit your body's needs. If you have a GP referral and are booking in for our bulk billed initial consult option, keeping a basic written food diary to bring to your consult can be helpful for recall when we discuss your usual diet. If you are booking in for our initial package (sports nutrition and private clients), more information is provided when booking. You will be emailed an information form once you have booked to fill out prior to your consultation. If possible, keeping a 7-day food diary (written or using a mobile app) is recommended as well. For Sports Nutrition Clients: Please wear loose fitting clothing if you have booked for a sports consultation as you may like to have your skinfold measurements done.
  • How often and how many times should I expect to see my dietitian?
How often you meet with your dietitian is individualised and will be tailored to what your needs are. However, often many of my clients meet with me weekly and then extend to fortnightly and monthly as appropriate.
  • Why are there no testimonials on your website?
Dietitians Australia (DA) has a strict rule of non-use of testimonials for promotional purposes. This is both to protect your privacy and to ensure that you and your circumstances are not exploited for promotional or monetary gain.
